Toyota Repair: Electrical ???, double contact, light assemblies

I have a 06 pre-runner with v6 eng. When I step on the brake the odometer light dims. Now the real problem. When I turn on my lights all three brake lights go on and stay on as long as the lights are turned on. The truck has had the odom. light problem since day one and I have a feeling the brakes lights have been on since day one too. The truck has 50k and is an auto. trans. Thanks for your help. Ron

Remove the tail light assemblies on both sides and remove the bulbs, carefully check that the correct bulbs are installed, the bulbs should match the sockets, mixing up single contact bulbs with double contact bulbs can cause this problem, while there check the bulb sockets for any signs of overheating or melted contacts, sometimes this problem can be caused by a tow hitch wiring problem, if it has a trailer hitch disconnect the wiring for it from the rest of the electrical system to see if it solves the problem.
