Toyota Repair: 1989 Toyota Celica - Recurring check engine light problem, air intake hose, mass air flow

Question
This issue began in November 2007 when my 1989 Celica check engine light first appeared while driving. I have taken my car to an independent mechanic, Doug, the owner of San Diego Bus and Auto Repair, 619-222-4520. Computer codes read either 25 (too lean) or 26 (too rich). My mechanic, in stages, has replaced the O2 sensor, the fuel filter, the spark plugs, the EGR valve, and has made numerous adjustments to a screw under a covered plug in the MAFM (mass air flow module). In total, I have spent $915.84 on four separate occasions between 11/22/07 and 06/26/08. The Check Engine light continues to come on while driving, at intervals of 22 miles to 305 miles. What can be done to correct this problem? Otherwise, my Celica operates and drives normally. It only has 117,300 original miles on it, is the convertible model with the 3SFE engine and manual transmission. Thank you for any help.

Answer
Joel,
This will most likely be something simple. I could write a book on mechanics replacing parts until they find the problem at the expense of the owner. A real rational technician will test parts and find the problem! I don't know how many times I 've told people over the years,
find a real expert that you have to pay a high hourly wage and he will find the cause, its much cheaper and a lot less time, headaches and hassles.

Its very hard to find a problem in long distance mode, If I were at
the vehicle it would take 5 minutes to 3 hours. In any event,
what most mechanics and auto parts store guys don't understand is those sensors are there to send a signal back to the ECM that the vehicle is running rich or lean, it DOESN'T mean the sensor is bad!

Check the air filter, large air intake rubber hose for obstruction, all clamps in rubber
air intake (these loosen up over time on all Toyotas). Remove the rubber air intake hose and check for cracks/rips in it(common on older vehicles). Clean the throttle body with carb cleaner(spray).

Good luck,
let me know.
