Toyota Repair: Speedometer Problems, toyota 4x4, speed sensor

Question
I just bought a 1991 Toyota 4x4 Ext. Cab pickup, 22RE motor, I was informed the truck has set for the past 2 years.  The speedometer and odometer do not work.  The previous owner thought it was the cable.  I have found a cable as a replacement part as well as a speed sensor.  How can I troubleshoot to see which that I need?  If its the speed sensor, where would it be located?

Answer
The first thing to do is pull the cable out of the transmission and
see if its broken on that end, that's usually were the problem is.
If that's ok then pull the instrument panel out slowly and reach behind
to disconnect cable. Don't try this unless you have a Chilton or
Haynes repair manual,(about $15. at auto parts store).

Good luck
Let me know.
