Question

My wifes` 02 Forerunner has 137 mileson it, a few months ago
the VSC & check engine lights came on. She took it to a Toyota dealer , who told her the timing belts needed re-placed ,which it was still the original. We told them to make the repairs, got the vehicle back, the lights were out
it ran fine. A month later the same lights came on.Took it back, they checked it again. Said it needed the catalytic converter replaced, at the cost of almost $2,000 grand. The first bill was $1,250 We told them #!@#$ you but no thanks.
I dis-connected the battery cable which re-sets the computer
I dosed it with gas treatment and hightest gas for a month.
This seemed to cure it. 10,k miles later the lights came back on. I`m not sure what to do. What do you suggest? I hate to take it back to a dealer that just replaces parts!!!!

Answer
If you have a copy of the repair orders then there should be a diagnostic trouble code or codes listed on them, I need to know what trouble codes are logged in the computer at this time in order to start to help. By the way these lights do not come on because the timing belt needs to be replaced, I'm not saying it didn't need it, just saying it's not the reason for the lights to come on.
