Toyota Repair: Timing Belt went out, compression test, timing belt

Question
While I was driving my timing belt went out.  I was told that this might have damaged my engine.  I am a do it yourself guy.  So I was wondering what I should do first.  I was going to put a new timing belt on.  But was told to first check engine for damage.  It was suggested I do a compression test.  Is there anything else I can do to check for engine damage?

Answer
Most of the toyota belt driven engines are of the non-interference type and there is no engine damage if the belt breaks but a few are not so I would need to know what year/model it is and what engine it has, you can find the engine designation on the label under the hood.
