Toyota Repair: 89 toyota 4x4 starter, toyota 4x4, auto pickup

Got an 89 4x4 V-6 Toyota auto pickup, only get a clik when I turn the key.  If I tap on the starter with a wrench a few times, it starts.  what is wrong and how do I fix it?  I don't want to get stranded.

The starter needs to be replaced, not real easy on a V-6, unless you have a lot of tools and a lot of patience and a good supply of band aids I would not advise that you do this yourself but I will be glad to give instructions, please provide an email address to send some illustrations to.
