Toyota Repair: Toyota PU died, salvage yard, coils

Question
94, 4 cyl, fuel inj, pu, 2wd.  Running fine, then just died.  Plenty of fuel. No spark.  Turns over just fine.
Reminds me of when the ignition module in my nova went bad.

Answer
A loss of spark on these engines is pretty much confined to to areas, it's either the distributor or the igniter module, doing the tests according to the manual are not very reliable, there is actually no reliable test for the igniter, most of the time the pickup coils in the distributor are the cause, I would start by getting a used distributor from a salvage yard, it will cost a lot less than having someone diagnose this as they will just do the same thing, substituting known good parts until they fix the problem but they will charge you about $90 an hour.
