Toyota Repair: 1990 Toyota Camry DX Clutch Issue, 1990 toyota camry, clutch replacement

Question
Hello i have a '90 Camry DX Manual Transmission w/ a hydraulic clutch & I think I need it replaced (Engine revving w/out speed increase, constant sensitive over-revving, quite pathetic rate of accelleration, funny smell).  Is there any reason this should cost more than three or four hundred dollars at an honest repair shop?  The first shop I went to asked for like 950, which would be approaching what I paid for the car in the first place.  My clutch has been acting up for months now, and I just drove it about four hundred miles to visit home for the holiday and do not want to drive four hundred back to go to my local repair guy.

Thanks Brandon!

Answer
The car must get on a lift & the transmission be dropped.
You need a clutch & a pressure plate for it. And the flywheel should be inspected / replaced if needed.
But yeah, you've nailed it being the clutch.

Probably 2-4 hours of labor, and labor nowadays runs $70-110/h.
Soooo. You probably will never own a vehicle that costs so little for a real clutch replacement. Unless you buy your own parts & pluck the engine out of the bay yourself! :)
