Toyota Repair: transmission problem, toyota corolla gl, toyota corolla

i have a 1987 toyota corolla GL. 1.3L i think. When I'm driving and put it into 5th it makes a grinding sound and pops back out into neutral. it doesnt stay in unless held there.

you have a bad 5th gear and/or syncro.
The trans will need to be repaired.
Some models can be rapired in the car as 5th gear is in the back of the trans. Its been a while, I forget if that applies to yours,
Either way you need a trans repair.
