Toyota Repair: Toyota Camry 1999 P0340 Code, camshaft position sensor, obdii scanner

Question
The CE Light is on and the OBDii scanner reads P0340, Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction. I pulled the sensor out and cleaned it up. It had a black, and ferric dust on the end (sort of like soot but it was magnetic). The code persisted after a code clear. The sensor changes value when passing a magnet past the end. 1.3K to .3 K ohms. Someone has suggested replacing the PCM for $1400. Seems like a wild shot in the dark to me. Any Ideas? Thank you

Answer
The only Toyota ECU's I've ever encountered, or heard of encountering that have ever failed are the second generation prius ECU's.
Short of that... Unless you crack up the ECU & unsolder it. It's not just flat out impossible. But in reality. It's not far from it. Check the wiring, the new sensor, and the installation/alignment of the sensor & pulley.(It must be mounted correctly also)

Remember that if you have a v6, both cylinder heads have cam position sensors. If you join www.toyotanation.com You'll find the factory service manuals avalible in the Camry forum.
