Toyota Repair: Coolant for my 93 Camry, toyota coolant, ethylene glycol

Question
Hi Ted...

I am going to be changing the thermostat in my '93 Camry and was wondering if it is ok to use the yellow Prestone all makes and models anti-freeze.  It states in the owners manual to use ethylene-glycol.  Wondering if this new stuff is compatible with the coolant that is in it.  I do not believe it has ever been changed, so it is due.  Do you recommend removing the drain plug on the engine and flushing with water (not with a hot block naturally) as stated in the manual.  If so, could you give me a better explanation of where it is located.  Any other tips you can give would be great.  Thanks in advance.

Answer
The coolant used in the 1993 camry is compatible with all except the new super long life toyota coolant, if the prestone is designated as all makes and models it will be ok to use in the '93, there is no need to completely remove all the old coolant from the engine, just drain the radiator, the small amount left in the engine will mix with the new coolant. By the way, all coolants except for the new super long life use ethylene glycol as a base.
