The transmission is leaking where the bell housing meets the engine block.  I suspect the seal on the spline shaft that mates to the torque converter.  I have been looking for a procedure to replace this seal but have yet to find one.  I have another transmission but have not experimented yet.

The seal itself can be removed with a seal puller, available at most autoparts stores, the new seal is then installed with some sort of steel pipe the fits exactly on the outer steel rim of the seal,toyota has a special tool but you can improvise, the trick is not to deform the seal while installing.
It is not necessary to remove the transmission oil pump.
