Toyota Repair: 92 Camry wont start, toyota camry, distributor cap

Question
I have a 1992 Toyota Camry, 4 cylinder.  We were driving about 35 miles per hour when it lost power for a couple of seconds, then picked up speed again for a minute or two, then lost power again and died.  We tried to restart it...it turns over but won't start.  we disconnected the fuel line to the fuel pump, turned the ignition to on and got no fuel, but when cranking fuel comes out of the pump.  My husband tested the spark plugs and did not get a spark.  Can you tell us what the problem is?

Answer
It's possible that the timing belt either slipped or is broken completely, it can be checked for a broken or stripped belt by removing the distributor cap and watching the rotor while the engine is turning over, if the rotor turns the belt is intact but it still could be the problem because it may just have jumped on the gears, in that case the timing of the belt has to be checked, this is done by removing the upper timing cover to physically check the belt and to see if the timing marks are still lined up.
If the problem is not the timing belt it may be a problem with the distributor, some of these engines had problems with the ignition coil(located inside the distributor)the coil would develop cracks or burn through the insulation, the coil can be inspected by removing the rotor and the coil cover, if none of the above are the problem replace the distributor entirely, please let me know if there is anything else I can help with.
