Toyota Repair: 4runner oil consumption, blown head gasket, piston ring

Question
the 2000 4runner has 130,000 miles. I want to say the smoke is white, maybe very light blue. It only smokes about every third or fourth time starting, regardless of it being a warm or cold start and regardless of outside temperature. thanks

2000 4runner v6 4x4 130k, had it 6 months. About every 3rd time I start the engine I get a huge puff of smoke that goes away after a few seconds. Never smokes while driving and operates very well. No external leaks, but loses 1qt per every 200 miles driven. Just got the pcv valve changed with no difference. thanks

Answer -
There is obviouly a problem if the engine uses 1 qt of oil in 200 miles.
How many miles does the odometer have on it?
What color is the smoke, blue, white or what?
These engines are normally very reliable and this sounds like an unusual situation.

Answer
White smoke(steam) is normally caused by coolant entering the combustion chamber, blue smoke is caused by oil being burned in the combustion chamber, I think that at this time I would advise that you do two things, have the engine compression tested, you will get a compression reading for each cylinder, this should be about 160-200 psi and if necessary have the engine tested for a possible internal combustion leak, most decent repair shops can do this but I would recommend having the toyota dealer do both tests, it seems there is a problem with this engine because it uses too much oil and the smoking issues.
This may be due to a blown head gasket that is leaking coolant into one or more cylinder, when this happens the piston rings and cylinder walls will not seal and lose compression because the coolant will break down the piston ring's ability to control the oil, hope this makes sense and good luck with this.
