BMW: Electronic shift control, shift control, bmw 325

Question
I have a 1992 BMW 325 6 cylinder.  Recently the shift control light on the dash comes on and the owners manual says I need to replace the "electronic shift control".  I cannot find this part for sale online.  Is this something that I have to buy at the dealer and can I install it myself.  Is the transmission damaged?
Thanks,
Jeff

Answer
Honestly, take it to a shop. You will need to pull codes from the computer and this will guide them to what you will need. As far as replacing the computer yourself, you could if you bought a programmed EGS (trans control module)but you may still have problems. Seek local expert advise on this. If you are near a B.M.W. dealership, call and sak them what they would charge to diagnose the issue. Sorry I couldn't help you more with this, but I would need more info than you could obtain without the right equipment.
