Toyota Repair: 87 Toyota Corolla, air fuel mixture, toyota corolla

Question
Hi Ted,
I have a '87 Toyota Corolla LE, 4 cyl., 1.6 L.
Milage: 188,020. It is carbureted.

This car is hard to start.I must spray carburetor cleaner or pour a little gas down the carb before it will start.
However,it starts fine while the engine is warm;so I have this problem only when the engine is cold.

And it sometimes "cuts out" especially going up a hill.

I've had new air and fuel filters installed, also new spark plugs.

Do you know what could be causing this problem and what should I do?

Thank you for your help.

Answer
Possibly a problem with the carburetor choke which is supposed to make the air/fuel mixture richer on start up, it is possible that the choke plate does not close when the engine is cold.
Also, the accelerator pump in the carburetor may be malfunctioning.
Try to find a remanufactured carburetor and just replace it.
