Toyota Repair: check engine light for a 1997 toyota avalon, emission control system, toyota avalon

My wife has an 1997 avalon and the check engine light came on.  I had it check out and the trouble shooting code is: P0440.  The code was related to the evaporative emission control system.  Do I need to see a dealer, is the vehicle safe to drive, can you help?  Or, is there something I might be able to do on my own?

Try replacing the gas cap, disconnect the battery for ten seconds that should clear the trouble code or remove and reinstall the EFI fuse under the hood, if the same code comes back have the dealer check why, this is strictly emission control related and does not affect driveability or safety.
