Toyota Repair: cv jiont repair, 1986 toyota tercel, lower ball joints

Question
dear Ted
i have a 1986 toyota tercel wagon (4w) that is in bad need of cv joint replacement.  can you tell me how to do it, and what would an economic way to purchase them.
thanks magdy

Answer
I discourage people feom doing this themselves mainly because that the axle nut on the end of the axle shaft is extremely tight and requires large breaker bars and some way to keep the axle from turning, in the shop we use air impact tools to break them loose.
Once the axle nut is off the lower ball joints are disconnected and the rotor assembly is moved off the axle and tied out of the way then the axle has to be pried out of the transmission with some very large prybars, the most economical way is to buy the axles from any local auto parts place, they have remanufactured units that are very reasonable.
