Thanks for the insight. Do I have to dismantle the dash to get at the check engine light? Is the bulb generally available or do I have to get it from Toyota? Lastly, does the extended warranty on the O2 sensors also apply to the V6 engines? The dealer claims it was only the V8's.

Hi,
I just failed an emissions test because the check engine light is not working. I bought my Tundra used and have a suspicion that the O2 sensor failed and the check engine light was ignored long enough to burn out. Is there a fuse I should check? How do I access the bulb to replace it? My Tundra is a 2001 2WD SR5 V6 extended cab with automatic transmission. After failing the emissions test, I brought it back to the dealer and they advised that the "right bank O2 sensor" had failed. They want $375 to replace the sensor and who knows how much to get the check engine light working again. Any suggestions?

There is a possibility that someone has removed the check engine light bulb, there is a known problem with the O2 sensors and toyota has extended the warranty period to something like 8yrs/90,000 miles, there is an enhanced warranty in effect, there was a service bulletin issued, your dealer should know this, if the truck has more than 50,000 miles they should replace both of the sensors at no charge to you by following the factory instructions provided by the extended warranty information, if the dealer does not know what I'm talking about get back to me and I will provide you a copy of the enhanced warranty information to show to them.
AnswerYes the dealer is correct, it only applies to V-8 engines.
To get to the bulb the instrument cluster needs to be removed from the dash, I don't know if there is an aftermarket bulb avaiable but you can remove it and see if the local parts store can match it up, if the bulb is not there contact the toyota dealer.
