Toyota Repair: 1992 Toyota Pickup V-6, intake hoses, air leak

Question
Hi Ted
I think I have a good one. This pickup died on a friend of mine while he was driving down the road. Now it will start and then after about a second, die. He has replaced the fuel pump, distributor and computer with no success. Then he called me. I tried a different MAF with no results. The injection pulses seem to be very short. The Main relay stays engaged as well as the fuel pump. I have good fuel pressure at the injector rail. I also never lose my spark. I am beginning to believe I may have a clogged catalytic. Any other suggestions? Thanks Don

Answer
Check for a large intake air leak, make sure there are no cracks in the air intake hoses from the air cleaner to the throttle body.
Eliminate a possibly totally restricted exhaust by disconnecting the catalityc converter and see if the problem goes away.
Check the PCV hose on the right valve cover and make sure it's not cracked or disconnected, it sounds to me there is an intake air leak somewhere.
