Toyota Repair: 1999 toyota Camry 2.2L compression problem, valve shims, gasket kit

Question
Dear Ted:

I have a 110 lb reading in cylinder no 1.The remaining cylinders read 180 lbs.Placing some engine oil in to cylinder no. 1 failed to increase compression.I do not believe any exhaust valve adjustment is possible. The engine has 86k miles. It runs well with the exception of drive idle speed roughness.A remanufacured head is $250,gasket kit$175 and timing belt $30.Please answer the following 1.What is the approx. professional labor hours to remove the cylinder head and replace it with a remanufactured head 2.Would the new head normally cause a new oil burning problem because of its inherent tightness in relation to the older pistons and rings 3.Would the back yard mechanic be able to perform the repair with a factory cd manuel and no specialized tools in a reasonable time? and 4.how long will the cylinder last driven in its current condition? Thanks.

Answer
Valve adjustment is possible, this engine uses valve shims to set the correct clearance, I would recommend that you check the valve clearance on the #1 cylinder before doing anything else, if the clearance it good there may be a valve problem.
The normal time for removing a cylinder head and reinstalling it is about 8 hours, Piston rings normally last well into the 200K range, so I see no problem there.
