Toyota Repair: Sienna sliding door handle, sliding door, cables

Pass. sliding door handle on 2000 Sienna: from the outside, handle is non-funtional as the metal link is broken.  The door can still be opened from the inside.  Do I just need to replace the exterior handle or may it require more parts replacement inside the lock mechanism? Can you provide some details on what to disassemble? Thanks.

remove the sliding door inner panel for inspection, there are connecting cables to the lock and they either break or just come off, sometimes because of a malfunction with the door lock mechanism, if all the cables are intact the door lock itself may need to be replaced.
