Toyota Repair: 1995 toyota corolla, wheel bearings, toyota corolla

Question
Well I did have the bearing pressed today and I replaced the hub and bearing because they did have play but that didn't fix the problem.  Something is still wrong with the brakes.  Like I mentioned in my previous questions, when I hit the brakes I hear a hum or a groan of some type but only when I apply the brakes.  Could it be the master cylinder?  The brake booster is working like it should.  There is some air in the lines but not enough for me to have this kind of problem, I mean I've had it alot more air in the lines before and it didn't act like this. Or could it be the the Proportioning Valve.  When I release the brakes (with dead silence in the car) I can hear a crunching type sound when I apply pressure and release on the Driver's side, where I seem to be hearing this hum or groan.  It has done this for a while so that's why I don't think they're related but you never know.  I've had this car to 3 mechanics and they are stumped, that's why I keep asking you.  You've worked on these Toyotas enough to experience the ins and outs.  If you are becoming stumped as well, can you direct me where to look or go next?  Oh and by the way, I had the tranny checked yesterday as well and they said nothing seems out of the ordinary as far as the spider gears.  No knocking when you turn the wheels or play or clunking that they usually make when they go bad.  Thanks again Ted.   -------------------------

Ok I did try that this past Monday and it didn't help.  I had the tires (all 4 of them checked for a run-out, balance, bumps, blisters you name it).  I even had them take the tires off and check the balance of the rim to see if it was bent or distorted in any way and they didn't find anything either.  So, I need to ask you this, what kind of noises do bad wheel bearings make usually?  I heard they make a groan, but not a thumping or shimmy type noise like I hear and what can make the hub wear out?  Only when I have to press on the brake pedal does it make the groan or hum sound, so a wheel bearing there I can understand.  Anything else would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks so much Ted!!!1-------------------------

Question -
Ok I did have the passenger side changed, hub and bearing a week and a half ago, but it sounds like it works in conjunction with something else I'm about to tell you about.  I hear a thumping or knocking noise, as the axle rotates in gear and in neutral, especially on a down grade and really smooth roads. Now I had the transmission replaced at the beginning of October because of a differential problem, spider gears wore out, time to blame for that one I guess.  This time it makes almost the same noise but not pronounced in turns like it did before, it doesn't matter if I'm going straight or turning and I can only hear it loud enough at lower speeds, so that's why I thought differential again.  I just changed the driver's side axle because of the inner joint was worn, yes before the outer one,  another reason I keep thinking Differential, and I checked the bearing and it has no play.  Could the hub be worn out?  The steering wheel has a hollow sound to it when I hit a bump or something, yeah like we have nice roads in Pennsylvania,  could that be the universal joints before the rack because I just changed on both sides, balljoints, inner and outer tie rods, control arm bushings, and sway bar links, so I know I have good chassis parts, I even put 4 new struts on the car as well this past August.  I think I gave you enough info to wanna choke me but I'm at a loss here and after all the parts I put in this thing I don't want to get rid of it u know.  Thanks for reading Ted, you've been a great help!!!!  -------------------------

I did what you suggested and you were on the money. thanks Ted. Now i have another problem with this car, the brakes.  It's making a nasty hum type sound when i have to stop suddenly, now i changed both rotors and pads, and even thought that either or both were warped so i changed them again and still the same problem.  I adjusted the rear parking break to spec so the rear isn't dragging and the calipers in the front seem to be working properly or at least i think they are.  Please help Ted!!!!-------------------------

Question -
I have a 95 corolla that had a 7AFE engine and I replaced it with a 4AFE engine and ever since then the check engine light will not go out.  I tested the diagnostics since its self explanatory and also had my local toyota dealer check it as well and they said it could be a "ghost code", being that it reads certain things like ppm from the o2 sensor since the one I had would read the ppm required from the 7AFE.  Please help me?

thanks

Justin
Answer -
When you changed the engine did you also change the computer and the wire harness because they are not the same and that may very well be the problem.

Ted,

I didn't change the computer because the people who changed it used my old intake because of the EGR valve setup it has.  They told me that the 4AFE doesn't have the EGR valve on it, for some reason that sounds odd to me though!  Thank you for pointing out that information to me about the computer and harness, however, I have just one more question in regards to the answer you provided.  Will the 4AFE computer work with the EGR valve off my old intake and do I have to change several other things like sensors and what not?  Thanks again Ted.

Answer -
These two engines are completely different and I don't understand how they could have used the old intake system.
It sure sounds odd to me also, the engine they put in may not have an egr system it may be an out of country engine, possibly from japan, I don't know, all I know is that in the US all of these engines had an EGR system as required by the EPA.
Answer -
It sounds like there may be a problem with one of the front wheel bearings.
Answer -
What about a tire problem, try changing the tires front to rear and see if the noise changes, somehow I don't believe that the differential could be going out again this soon.
Answer -
Raise the front of the car off the ground and check each wheel if it feels loose, if the wheel bearing has a problem you will feel some free play, there should be none whatsoever.

Answer
A problem in the hydraulic system won't cause any kind of noise, it sounds like a mechanical problem, I know that a lot of parts have already be replaced but the only other possible solution that I can think of,without me actually hearing the noise, is that the noise may be coming from the brake pads making contact with the rotors, as a last resort you may wish to replace the pads and make sure the original pad shims are installed and resurface the rotors.
