Toyota Repair: Vehicle Speed Sensor in 94 4Runner, vehicle speed sensor, toyota 4runner

Question
Sir,
I have '94 Toyota 4Runner,V6, A/T,4X4 the ECM diagnosed it has a Vehicle Speed Sensor malfunction. I pulled the VSS and the teeth on the shaft were damaged-i believe this could be due to me having to drive it approx 200mi with a bad drive shaft, which was repaired the day prior to the VSS failure.I bought a new shaft for the VSS and installed it.No responce, so i pulled it (appox 3 mi later) to find these teeth damaged as well. I have researced every book and website and cant find installation instructions, am I missing something? Is there an internal part that drives this I can check for damage? It appears EZ to remove the drive shaft and the cover where the VSS goes into? Thanks for your help.

Answer
There is a drive gear on the transmission output shaft that this gear engages into, remove the driveshaft and then the tailshaft housing, you can then inspect the drive gear for any damage, it is held in place by snap rings it is possible that the snap ring came off and the gear moved on the shaft.
