Toyota Repair: 86 Tercel Wagon Auto 3AC, accelerator valve, carbon canister

Question
3-AC, Federal, auto, AC.  The car has a "hot soak" problem.  When driven till warm, especially hot days (here in NC), starts rough.  Gas smell after park.  Hard to start even after overnight sit.  Runs rough for a few minutes, then fine.  New head (fairly recent), tune up recent, oil changed regularly, all emissions checked.  Carbon canister temporarily disconnected, no difference.  Temp gauge shows normal.  AC is not used.  Choke seems fine, aux. accelerator valve not leaking.  Timing, idle speed, idle mixture all to spec.  I've seen carbs on these engines drain after park, but I've never found the reason.  I'd rather not spend $200+ for a rebuild carb if poss.

Answer
These engines had this problem because there was excessive carbon buildup on the back of the valves, the carbon would soak up all the gas until the point of saturation and then the engine would start but run rich until the fuel was absorbed, there even was a recall or special service campaign to remove the carbon, the remedy to this problem is to remove the cylinder head and remove the valves and clean and grind the valves.
