Toyota Repair: Brakes, rear brake drums, rear brakes

Question
Ted,

2000 Corolla VE.  All the brakes on the car are new.  However, when backing up and turning to the left, the rear brakes squeal and sound almost dry.  It doesn't sound like a grinding noise but is very loud and annoying.  It only seems to happen when turning the tires to the left and only when backing up.  As well, only when the brakes are applied.  The emergency brake seems to have lots of life.

Any thoughts?

Answer
Rear brake squueks are sort of common on some Corollas especially in dry climate conditions, what seems to help is removing the rear brake drums and cleaning the brake shoes by using a srtrip of sandpaper to get rid of the glaze that forms, the same for the brake drums, then spraying them off with either water and soap or a commercially available brake cleaner, after that applying a thin coat of antiseize compound between the contact points of the brake shoes and the backing plates, that normally fixes the problem.
