Toyota Repair: oil leak at head gasket, head gasket, oil leak

Question
i recently purchased an 88 camry.  during the vehicle inspection, the tech said it had an oil leak at the head gasket.  what would be an estmated repair cost?  as a do-it-myself person, what grade of difficulty is this.  i have rebuilt engines in the past.  thanks, tom

Answer
4 CYL OR 6 CYL?
ON A SCALE OF 0-10 10 BEING THE HARDEST. I WOULD RATE IT AN 8.
UNLESS YOU HAVE DONE IT BEFORE AND KNOW THE VEHICLE AND THE WAY THE TIMING BELT AND CAMS GO TOGETHER IT IS HARD. BUT I AM NOT UNDER-ESTIMATEING YOUR ABILILTY. GET A CHILTONS BOOK AND GO FOR IT. IT TAKES ME TO DO A 4 CYL FROM START TO FINISH WITH NO REST AND REPLACEING ALL SEALS ABOUT 3-5 HOURS. DEPENDING ON IF I RUN INTO PROBLEMS WITH VALVES OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. PAUL P.
