I have a 1985 toyota truck and I am in the process of changing the rear crank seal, their is some type of flange that the flywheel bolts to that is larger than the seal or seal housing at the rear of the crankshaft. How does that part come off to get access to the seal and housing? How does it stay connected to the crank? Is their some type of keyway? Thanks for any help you have. John
Answer -
CAN U SEE THE SEAL ON THE ENGINE WITH FLYWHEEL REMOVED? Yes I can see the seal and the seal housing. The seal is smaller dia. than the end of the crankshaft part that the flywheel bolts to.

Answer
YOU NEED TO DROP THE OIL PAN..THE SEAL IN THAT TRUCK IS OF AN EARLY DESIGN.. IT'S CALLED A ROPE SEAL. IT'S ACTUALLY 2 SEALS IN 1. ON HALF IS ON THE BOTTOM OF THE OIL PAN AND THE OTHER HALF IS UP ON THE TOP OF THE CRANK..... IT IS NOT A ONE PIECE FROM WHAT I'VE SEEN. JUST DOUBLE CHECK AND LOOK AT IT CLOSELY. LET ME KNOW... AND I WILL ADVISE FROM THERE. PAUL P.
