Toyota Repair: Check engine lite, toyota corolla dx, gas milage

Question
I have a 96 Toyota Corolla DX that the check eng lite comes on. The error code is always 301, intermittent misfire on cyc #1. Four different dealers have worked on my car and all have repleaced the plugs, wires, rotor, and cap. These peeps can't get it right and won't believe me when I tell them that is not the fix.  What else could be wrong? The eng runs great and the gas milage has not changed. The  check eng lite sometimes stays off for many weeks and at other times it come back on soon after being reset.

Any help is greatly appreciated...

Answer
I'm going to get back to you monday or tuesday, I need to check if there were any service bulletins issued about this, I should have some sort of an answer for you then.

There are no service bulletins regarding this condition,
the only thing I can think of at this time is that there have been a few isolated cases where the wire harness from the engine going into the inside to the computer developed a bad connection at one of the splice points inside the insulation.
Try grabbing the wire loom while the engine is running and pull on it and move it around as much as you can to try to duplicate the condition.
One more thing I wanted to ask is that if you ever feel the misfire before the light comes on, if you never experience the misfire itself it may be too small a variation for you to pick up but the computer registers it, it may be necessary as a last result to replace the ECM.
