Toyota Repair: Squeeky clutch pedal, squeek, business and professions code

Question
Dear Ted,

I put my 1997 4runner (91K miles)in for a routine inspection but noted that my clutch pedal began squeeking when pressed.  When I picked it up, they said they had lubricated the master cyclinder, but if the squeeking continued that it would have to be replaced.  I've not noted any diffculty in the performance of the clutch (it's a bit stiff, but has always been that way)or the transmission.  I was a bit irritated with them for not calling me and telling me that they were going to do the work which cost about 100.00, mostly in labor, and when I complained he said that he would apply it to replacement of the master should be needed, and proceeded to quote me about 200.00 (part and labor), which while not terribly expense, why should I pay double the labor?  Well when I drove it out, the squeek was worse.  He indicated that it may take a bit to get all the lubrication through (whatever that means) and that if the squeek didn't subside that I should bring it back for the master cylinder replacememt.  Sorry about the verbage, but this is really a roundabout way of asking if the squeeking is really a symptom of a malfunctioning Master, or should I just try and lube the pedal linkages, or what else could it be?  I just don't like to do unnecessary replacements.  Thanks in advance for you help.

Answer
The bushings in the clutch pedal bracket can cause the sqeek noise, I don't think the master cylinder is the problem, the proper fix for this is to remove the pedal assembly and replace the bushings and of course, lubricate everything.
By the way,it violates the business and professions code to perform a repair and charge the customer without prior authorization and is  against the law in most states of the US, you may want to get informed about your state laws regarding this.
