Toyota Repair: Squeaking sound when brake is released, rear drum brakes, rear brake drums

Question
My 96 Corolla squeaks when I release the brake from a stationary position with transmission set to 'D'.  What might this be a symptom of?  Could it mean I have to change my brakes?  There's no squeaking at other times.

Answer
Hello Joshua, welcome to my expert page.
The rear drum brakes could be the cause of the noise when releasing the brake pedal, it is caused by the brake shoes moving against the backing plate, the solution is to remove the rear brake drums and moving the brake shoes away from the backing plate and applying grease to the  areas where the brake shoes contact the backing plates.
