Tractor Repair: Case 5250 clutch, clutch pack, clutch packs

Question
Hi Andy

On my Case 5250 the fwd clutch is slipping, but still will move the tractor. In reverse it works fine and I believe the Fwd and rev clutch have different clutch packs. How can I tell if it is a clutch pack, hydraulic problem or something else? If the clutch pack needs to be replace does the transmission need to be split? I have noticed that the FEL will not lift as much as before.

Answer
The pressure to the forward and reverse shuttle clutches should be checked with a gauge.  There are test ports on the shuttle valve on top of the rear end of the tractor where gauges can be installed.  The pressure should be about 300 psi.  If the pressure is lower in forward than in reverse, there is an internal leak in the clutch circuit.  If it has been slipping for awhile, the forward clutch is probably worn and needs to be replaced.  To get to the shuttle clutches, the tractor needs to be split between the transmission and rear frame.
