Tractor Repair: solenoid, starter solenoid, solenoid

Question
Is there anyway to check a solenoid to determine if it is bad? I have a '61 Ford Workmaster 601 diesel. The number on the solenoid is ST 541.Thanks for any input.

Answer
i take it you mean the starter solenoid if the starter is engageing then the solenoid should be fine but there are two parts to a starter solenoid there are also the contact that switchs on the motor if you put a voltmeter on the two points of the contact you should get 12 to 13v then get someone to turn the starter with the key and this should drop to near 0 if you get anything over one volt the contact is bad and therefor you need to get a new solenoid
