Tractor Repair: bad carburator, dry cylinder, accurate answer

Question
QUESTION: Sears had to order a new carburator for my riding mower.  The tech said I could still use while waiting for the part. He told me over the phone and I can't remember if he said to put something in the carb or bypass it.  Once he leaves it is impossible to reach him again. Can you help?

ANSWER: Without more info I really can't give you an accurate answer.
What was it doing to need a new carb?
Is this still under warranty?
If it is be careful that whatever he has told you to do does not void your warranty, (even something that their tech told you to do can void it)
Let me know what you find out and we can go from there.
If you would please rate my answer, Thanks

QUESTION: Not under warranty.
Engine would crank but not start. Battery and spark plug new.  Tech had the engine running while he was here.  Said gas was getting TO the carb.

Answer
I would try to rebuild and clean the carb before I spent the money on a new carb.
A rebuild can cost just a few dollars.
He might have said to spray some starting fluid into the carb to get it running.
Be careful when you do then because starting fluid will clean the oil from the cylinders and the piston leaving a dry cylinder
