Tractor Repair: JD 6410 injection pump, injector pump, screwdriver

Question
Drew, How complicated would it be to replace a injector pump on my tractor?  The tractor has been smoking heavily at times since getting the engine overhauled and the mechanic said the pump was on its way out.  I'm hoping it is within my ability, hands on farm equip. training, no formal mechanic training.  Any pointers to look for?  Thank you, Louis

Answer
Well I think I can help.  First I am going to need to know what kind of pump it is. If it's a Lucas then it should be pretty easy. On the side of the engine block is a plastic cover you can take it off and access the flywheel. Use this to turn over engine until you can put a small screwdriver into the hole underneath it into a hole in the flywheel. This should be top dead center #1  then take the cover off the front of the timing cover remove the bolts and nut. Only problem you might have is finding a tool to press of the gear. I have made one but you might be able to borrow one from a dealership. Then you should be able to figure out the rest. If your pump is electronically controlled then I will need the engine and tractor serial number but I don't think you will want to mess with it as the computer could be the cause.
