Tractor Repair: Case 1070 powershift, piston seals, piston seal

Question
Hi, i have a case 1070 white cab 1976, when i bought it the cab mounts had been broken and they were still using the tractor and had adjusted the linkage. It was slipping in power shift first and reverse we split the tractor and replaced torque limit clutch, and all clutch pack seals  that came in the seal kit from case and oil distributer rings. We put the tractor back together and have 180-200 psi in all c1,c3 %26 c4, c2 only getting 150 psi in reverse, first and third power shift positions. Do you think its a stuck spool? what other checks can we make to determine if c2 is leaking or if i should split the tractor again? Thank you for your time and help!

Answer
Hello,

C2 definitely has lower pressure.  If you installed all new piston seals and oil distributor rings, the only possibilities are:

A)  You broke an oil distributor ring while installing the powershift, or the oil distributor has grooves worn into it.

B)  There is an o-ring blown on a jumper tube between the powershift valve and the oil distributor.

C)  There is a gasket blown in the powershift valve.

D)  The C2 piston seal was damaged while installing the piston.

E)  One of the rubber sealing rings is missing between the C2 and C3 carriers.

There is really no test that can be done to determine where the leak is before taking anything apart.  After the powershift unit is assembled, it should be air checked before installing it to make sure there are no leaks.  If there is a leak after putting it all back together and running it, then you would know that the leak is not inside the unit.  I would suggest removing the powershift valve and checking if any gaskets were blown, and then you can blow air into the C2 jumper tube to check if there is an internal leak.  If there is, everything will have to come apart and inspected.
