Tractor Repair: 1969 ? ford 3000, ford 3000 tractor, adjustment screws

Question
I own a ford 3000 tractor. I think it is a 1969 . It has an up draft carb. on it. The tractor runs great and will reach 2100 rpm with ease , but it will only run for 3 to 4 hrs. then it will backfire thru carb. stumbles then shuts down . I can not restart the tractor for another 4 to 6 hrs.  While it will not start ,gas will drip from under the throat of carb .How can I fix this?

Answer
Sounds to me that the float in the carb is getting stuck. Inside the main body is a float just like in a toilet. They are made of a bronze or a brass type of material. When they get old they can crack causing fuel to get inside and flood the carb with fuel, this could be your cause of the tractor dying. You can, if you are careful take the carb off and take the main bowl off. You can get a kit online or a parts store. Just don't touch the adjustment screws and resealing it is pretty easy. Also don't remove the jets the little bronze things inside with small holes, if they are plugged use a torch tip cleaner and run it thru the holes.
