Tractor Repair: 1974 464 Case IH injector pump problem, crankcase breather, lift pumps

Question
I have a 1974 464 Case IH 3 cyl. diesel tractor. Not sure of the hours. I'm getting fuel in the crank case and a fuel an oil mixture is coming out of the crankcase breather tube. I have not took anything apart yet. I caught this pretty quick and the tractor still runs good so I think the motor is okay. I've been told the problem is the injection pump seal is bad. I've also been told the pump may have to be set in time. I've done many minor repairs to vehicles and this tractor but I'd still probably be considered a beginner mechanic. Can you tell me the process to change this pump and/or other problems I could have or should I let a pro do it.
Thanks for your time.
Ben

Answer
Hello,

Most likely there is a mechanical lift pump on side of the engine that pumps fuel from the tank to the filters and injection pump.  This is the most likely cause of fuel getting into the crankcase and would be the easiest to fix, although it's not impossible for the injection pump to leak fuel.  When the diaphragm fails on these lift pumps, fuel goes directly into the engine.  Check that first and if that is not the problem, then get back to me and we'll worry about the injection pump.  The injection pump should be a last resort because it is a more complicated procedure to remove, install, and time it correctly, and depending on what type of pump it is, it may require special tools.
