Nissan Repair: 2002 Nissan Pathfinder SES, nissan pathfinder, nhtsa

Question
Dear Von Sudderth, We have a 2002 Nissan Pathfinder. Whe have had it for over a year. On this inspection the SES light was not going on. The inspection station took apart the dash, thinking they could just replace the light for us. It seems this light can not be replaced, and in fact was melted off. We had to purchase the whole assembly - odometer, circuit boards, etc because it is only sold as one piece. We are now out $862.00 with labor just for a light. We have contacted Nissan and they say because it melted, they will not cover cost. Wouldn't the melting issue show there was a defect in the circuit panel? Please advise. Thanks Luann

Answer
Luann,

If the light melted the board and harness it was a defect.  But, you will have heck proving it to the Nissan folks.  And, since it is a 2002 you are out of luck.  Now, if you want, you could go to nhtsa.gov and report the incident to them so they can let Nissan know that they need to be on the lookout for this.  It might have the potential of starting a fire and I would report it as such if Nissan is not going to be of help in this matter.  you did nothing to cause this problem and they are beign of little help.
