Tractor Repair: 2N reat axle bearing carrier, bearing retainer, 2n ford tractor

Question
I have removed the axle and brake drum on my 2N ford tractor.  The wheel seal was leaking. I am reluctant to cut the bearing retainer collar, as I could use an after market seal. The bearing looks ok.The bearing carrier is loose, with a lot of play.  Is that normal?

Answer
Hello,

Until the axle is installed and everything is bolted up, it will seem loose.  If the axle still has some play after bolting it up, there are shims that can be removed between the end of the axle housing and the brake backing plate.   The aftermarket seals that can be installed without removing the bearing and retaining collar are a good system, but don't forget to pack the bearing with grease before installing the seal, since it won't be getting oil from the rear axle anymore.
