Tractor Repair: Case back hoe battery, 12 volt batteries, 6 volt batteries

Question
Hello
I have a Case 580 super K back hoe. This model came with either 1 battery system or 2 battery system, both system are 12 volt. What would be the purpose of a two battery system, would it be simple enough for more cranking power?I am in need of buying a battery and could I get away with just putting one battery in it? Thanks

Answer
Hello,

I normally answer questions on ag tractors only, so I am not familiar with what systems these machines have.  A 2 battery system can have either 2 12 volt batteries wired parallel, or 2 6 volt batteries wired in series.  2 batteries wired in parallel gives the same voltage, but twice the amperage.  2 batteries wired in series gives twice the voltage, so 2 six volt batteries wired this way gives 12 volts.  Most diesel machines use 2 batteries to give the extra cranking power needed to start well in all weather conditions.  If you are in a climate that has warm enough weather for the machine to start OK with one 12 volt battery, then go for it.  The engine may not crank as fast, but if it starts OK it won't hurt anything.
