Tractor Repair: IH 464, hydraulic fluid, oil level

I have a 74 IH 464 gas. When checking the hydraulic fluid does the tractor need to be running or off? Does the tractor need to be warm or cold or does it matter?

Hello,

  You need to check it with the engine shut off.  It's best to check it cold before you start it for the day.  You can check it warm if you want, but after shutting off the engine you should wait about a half hour for the oil level to stabilize.
