Tractor Repair: Case 300-stuck in gear, dowel pin, lag bolt

Question
I have a Case 300.It is stuck in first gear and only first gear. The shaft mounted on the shifter cover, that the yoke is on,is towards the the rear of the tractor sticking underneath the main case of the tractor. This position prevents the shifter cover from being able to be lifted straight up to be removed. There is what looks like a dowel pin in the rear of the cover and the main case which prevents me from sliding the cover forward.I have been trying to remove the shifter cover for hours without any luck.Do you have any suggestions how to remove the shifter cover. Thanks, Darrell

Answer
Hello,

I have been looking at a diagram of the shift cover.  You can see this diagram at servicemotor.com, then click on parts, then online parts lookup, then CaseIH.  Type in 300 for the model, then click search.  Scroll down until you get to 300 case tractor, then click on it and click search.  Scroll down to transmission cover and click on it and you will see the parts layout.  It looks like the dowel pin in the cover is a hollow roll pin, so if you can use a blind-hole puller and slide hammer to remove it, or screw a lag bolt into it and pull it out with a vice grip and hammer, then maybe you can slide the cover forward enough to get it out.

                     Good luck,
