Tractor Repair: clutch/gear problem?, clutch gear, clutch disk

Question
I have a IH 784 with hydraulics tractor - up til a couple days ago there was no problem, however I checked the transmission dipstick and it appeared dry.  I added oil (possibly too much as the dipstick now shows over full).  Once warmed up now the tractor cant seem to be put into any gear.  My thought was that the oil got into clutch and caused problem.  Is this possible?  I drained out oil to the proper level and problem still exists.  Could this be a temporary problem now or do I need to look further?

Answer
Hello,

If oil did get on the clutch, it shouldn't cause that problem.  Oil will cause a clutch to slip under load, but that's all.  If it only happens after the tractor is warmed up, either the clutch disk is slightly warped, or there is too much free travel so the pedal is not moving the pressure plate enough to completely disengage.  On these models, you have to lift up on the clutch pedal to check the free travel.  There should not be more than a couple of inches of travel.  If there is too much, adjust the linkage until it's right.  This will give the pedal more stroke.  If this doesn't help, it will need to be split and the clutch repaired.  If you split it, then replace all the oil seals also.  If it's a little overfull, (not a lot) that's not a big deal.  Especially if it has a loader on it.

                      Good luck,
