Tractor Repair: Stalling Farmall Super A, thrust bearings, linkage problem

Question
My Super A exhibits the following symptoms.
1. Idles fine, but stalls when going up an incline.
2. Runs fine for about 10 minutes then stalls on incline or when pulling a load.
3. Stalls going forward on incline but runs fine going up the same incline in reverse.
4. If the throttle is open completely going up an incline it barely keeps from stalling, however when it starts back down, the engine takes off and runs much too rapidly.
5. Always runs fine going down an incline.
I hope you can give me a list of possible causes and the correct order to investigate each, so by process of elimination, I might be able to try the simple solutions avoid a costly repair bill.
On a scale of 1-5 (you being a 10), I would rate my mechanical skills as a 3. I bumped myself up from a 2 only because I own a fine set of Craftsman tools.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Answer
 Hello,

Several possibilities.  First check the flow of fuel from the tank.  The fuel line should run full stream, a dribble is not enough to run it under load.  Make sure the carburetor is clean inside and the float moves freely and is adjusted properly.  From your description of barely keeps from stalling, and then running much too rapidly, it sounds like the governor is not working.  Put the throttle lever at full, and check to see if the throttle plate in the carburetor is wide open.  If not, there is a throttle linkage problem, or the governor needs repair.  Anytime the engine takes off and runs too fast, the centrifugal weights are not functioning.  Possibly sticking, or the pivots are worn out.  Also the thrust bearings and sleeve that the weights push against could be worn out.  Many times, the thrust bearings fall apart and will cause some strange symptoms.

to look up parts and see a diagram of how the governor is assembled.  Type in Farmall A for the model search, and go to the engine section to find the governor.  At one time, you could get a governor overhaul kit, but now I'm sure the kit is not available anymore and must be pieced individually.  Parts are available from any Case IH dealer, or through online tractor parts stores.

               Good luck,
