Tractor Repair: 9N driving me to drink, vacuum leaks, volt system

Question
Good morning, In five years I've had my clutch, tires,12 volt system completely overhauled or replaced. Still I have problems consistantly keeping this thing running. I just had the car overhauled and the mechanic said the Air filter (complete unit) needs to be replaced. I will be the first to say I am an idiot so here is my next move. I can get it easily started now and it idols fine, I just drove it for the first time after the carb overhaul and drove about 600 feet. I stopped to open the barn door to put it in there and when I let out on the clutch it kills. It starts right up but kills again when I let the clutch out.
I beleive the carb should be adjusted ?? how should I proceed. I would appreciate any help.  Thanks

Answer
Hello,

I'm going to need a little more info from you.  Does this problem only occur when it is in gear with the clutch released, or will it also occur in neutral with the clutch released?  If it only kills while the engine is under load, check the fuel flow from the tank to make sure it's getting full flow.  Also make sure there are no vacuum leaks between the carburetor and manifold, and between the manifold and head.  Does it help if you pull the choke out as it starts to die?  If so, it's running too lean.  As a starting point after a carb overhaul, the mixture screws should be turned in all the way, but not tight.  Then unscrew them 1 and a half turns.  This will get you close.  The smaller adjustment screw is for idle mixture, and the larger one is for high speed mixture.  If it runs rough and smokes black, slowly turn the screws in until it runs smooth.  If there's no smoke and it sputters and wants to die, turn the screws out until it runs smooth.  As little as a 1/4 turn can make a big difference.  Make sure the ignition system is tuned up correctly also.  Don't get frustrated, these are a good old tractor.  That's why there's still so many of them around.  They're definitely worth fixing up.  Now that you've done all these things that you mentioned, sounds like you've got it almost completely restored so there shouldn't be much else that can go wrong now.

                           Good luck,
