Tractor Repair: SEARS CRAFTSMAN 2000 LAWN TRACTOR WITH HYDROSTATIC TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS, sears craftsman, hydrostatic transmission

Question

Hi Danny:

    We have a 2001 Sears Craftsman 2000 Lawn Tractor with a hydrostatic transmission.  The engine starts, and seems to run fine.  The problem is, the tractor will not go forward or in reverse and the front and back wheels do not or will not turn.  Right before this happened a pop was heard in the engine.  What could be causing this?  Is it repairable?

Look David any thing is repairable but at what cost is seen to be feasable.
Does the engine come under load when you push the lever for forward or reverse if it does the trans is trying to work and the problem is internal in trans diff or brakes.
If the engine does not load up stop it and check the belt drive if it has one or the clutch on the foot control.
David I am sorry if this sounds vaige as we do not have the Sears range of mowers in Australia so I am flying by the seat of my pants here.
Check the above items out and let me know what you find with it.
