Triumph Repair: crank shaft pulley, crankshaft pulley, crank shaft

Question
How do you remove the crank shaft pulley? how do you put a new one back on? 1965 Triumph tr4a

Answer
Hi David,

The crankshaft pulley is held in place by a long bolt extending all the way through the fan extension and the pulley into the crankshaft. You need to remove the bolts from the fan blade first. (look at the heads with a small mirror to see if they have lock tabs on them)

After you remove the fan blade you can access the head of the long bolt called the "Starting handle dog bolt". Once you remove or unscrew that long bolt you can undo the bolts holding the fan extension from the front pulley and remove the extension and dog bolt.

With the belt off you should be able to remove the pulley. If the pulley is tight on the crankshaft don't pry against the timing cover as you may dent it. Put small blocks on the engine to pry against or if you have a gear puller you may be able to get it into place to pull it but most can be pried off by prying on opposite sides of the pulley.

When reinstalling be sure to align the keyway and lube the pulley seal race area as you push it it back in.
