Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S engine problem, spark plug wire, style engines

Question
I have a Craftsman riding lawn tractor, model # 273451 with a B&S engine # 446777, Type 0246-E1.  The engine sometimes quits after about an hour.  It also is using oil.  I think the rings need replaced. Is there a rebuild kit for this engine?  If so, what is in it? I'm also thinking the carburetor needs replaced.

When the engine quits is it low on oil. Some have built in oil sensors so that if the oil gets low it will shut the engine down.

Defective Ignition Components
Although this is more common on older point style engines, there is a possibility that an ignition component is breaking down after the engine reaches a certain heat range. While not exactly easy, you can diagnose this situation by installing a spark tester between the spark plug and the spark plug wire and watching to see if spark is present when the engine dies.

If the engine is equipped with a point style ignition, there is a very strong possibility that the condenser is failing and should be tested or replaced.

For most small engines, it is considered normal to use around 1 ounce of oil per hour. Even then, there will be a slight variation (more or less) from one engine to another!

Before you decide that there is a real problem, try the following steps:

1. Wash the engine and equipment so that it is free from dirt and oil.
2. Fill the engine with oil to the recommended level.
3. Start and run the engine, using the equipment as you normally do.
4. After 1 hour of usage, stop the engine and carefully check the oil.

5. If the oil level is low, measure the amount that is required to refill.

Did the engine use less than 1 ounce of oil?

If the engine did use more than 1 ounce of oil in an hour or if you can see bluish gray or white smoke, the engine will require additional troubleshooting.

There really is not a rebuild kit they have parts for the problem areas, to rebuild a complete engine is  too costly the best way is to use a replacement engine.
