Triumph Repair: Timing chain cover.., noise damper, haynes manual

Question
OK, on my '79 Spit, what is that stuff or thing that is on the front of the timing chain cover? I thought at first mine had been damaged or something but I noticed a picture in the Haynes manual that showed the same "blob" of stuff. Mine seems to be lifting at the edges and I didn't know whether to chip it off or repair it.

Answer
Hi Steve,

If you are talking about a strip of material glued to the middle of the timing chain cover, that is a noise damper to help stop that sheet metal from amplifying engine noise. It probably helps stop fatigue fractures also from the sheet metal vibrating.

I would just trim the loose edges or glue them back down.
